Blog #7: Critical thinking (due THURSDAY, June 19)

We've spent the past few weeks reading about and listening to the causes of obesity in children.

Some of the culprits are:

1. Genetics ("Fat Chance")
2. The fast food industry, with McDonald's at the forefront ("Supersize Me")
3. The beverage industry ("Bottlers Agree to a School Ban on Sweet Drinks")
4. The advertising agency ("Ban on Fast-Food TV Ads May Cut Obesity")
5. The schools, for not educating the children about nutrition and for not providing physical exercise time and equipment ("Supersize Me")
6. The parents
7. The children
8. Other possibilities (video games/when we eat/where we eat/how much we eat...)

Having considered all of the information, who do you think is responsible for our children's obesity epidemic? Use evidence from the above sources--and others, if you have them--to explain, support, and argue your point of view.

You can start your composition as follows:

Although its difficult to single out just one specific cause for the obesity epidemic in America, I believe that the major cause of the problem is ___________.

A composition is not an essay. You can write 1-2 long paragraphs to answer the question.

  1. Although its difficult to single out just one specific cause for the obesity epidemic in America, I believe that the major cause of the problem is the parents. Even though I think main cause of obesity is genetic, children's obesity epdemic is because of the parents.
Although it's hard, people who are adult and have genetic that causes obesity can control their weight. However, children need someone who helps them to control their weight. Additionally, it's probably their parents. If their parents give them healthy food and enough food, they're not going to be obesity. Because their parents give them too much food or not healthy food, they're going to be obesity.

  2. Even though its difficult to single out just one specific cause for the obesity epidemic in America, I believe that the major cause of the problem are the parents. Although fast food and beverage industries are a significant contributors of the obesity epidemic, children need their parents money to buy food or soft drinks. Moreover, genetic is not an excuse either of obesity. Is true that for kids with obese genes is harder to loss weight, but is also true that parents are responsible to teach them how to eat healthy and balance. Finally, it doesn't mean that if children spend more time at school than at home schools are the problem. Parents can prepare a balance and healthy lunch for their children to go to school and, obviously, don't give the children money in order to encourage them to eat the healthy food that they prepared.

Children are not responsible about what they do because they are children and they have to be taught, but parents do. Parents are supposed to care about what their children eat. As we saw in all the sources, these problems are frequent in each child's life. However, parents have plenty of authority and abilities to avoid them of their children's life. They can be more careful of their sons and daughters health.

  3. Although it’s difficult to single out just one specific cause for the obesity epidemic in America, I believe that the major cause of the problem is the way we educate our children. Genetic, environment, etc., we can read about many causes that affect to obesity. However, this is my point of views for two principal reasons.

First, the genetic is important to know how is your body. There are many kinds of structures. For this reason, we need to teach out children the importance to know that they are health and perfect without any specific size. Who is your parent is essential to understand how your body will be. For example, one experiment shows that if you separate a twine to different kind of family – one obese and another thin – both have the same original parent’s body have. Indeed, your genes are important to determinate how you will be: thin or big structure.

Second, the government should legislate to incentive a healthy way to life since children are in school. Fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, etc., Even the sweeties are good in little doses. Eating lots of different kinds of food it’s important and essential to teach since people are kids. I don’t say that the government have to say you how, when and what you can eat. Everybody is free to do everything that they want. However, the social environment – government, society – should be participate in the nutritional education.

  4. Although its difficult to single out just one specific cause for the obesity epidemic in America, I believe that the major cause of the problem is genetics.
According to Fat change, “fat people have more fat cells than other people and their metabolisms are normal but their appetites are larger.” As they have fat cell more than others people which require more energy, they would like to consume more food. If they eat much more food than metabolism rate which they have the same metabolism rate with normal people, they will become get fat again because they will have some energy that will not use and transform energy to fat and keep it in their body. Even though some people have been changing their lifestyle and old habits, yet they are still getting fat. For instance, my brother-in-law eat only meat, fruits and vegetables, but he still gets fat which is controlled by gene. According to “Meta-analyses between 18 candidate genetic Markers and overweight/obesity,” the study shows that “polymorphism (one kind of genetic in our body) was significantly associated with the risk of Overweight and Obesity.” This study shows that some genes in our body was significant associated with risk of obesity because these genes control function of physiology in our body that also affect chemical processes differently in each person. For example, if one person who has these genes consume food the same portion with another person who does not have these genes, the first person has a chance to get fat than another person because these genes can cause risk of obesity.

  5. Although its difficult to single out just one specific cause for the obesity epidemic in America, I believe that the major cause of the problem is the parents. They are supposed to have a responsibility not just on their children's behavior in their life, but also they have responsibility if their children have done something wrong. For example, now the parents encourage their children by giving them a candy or buying a fast food meal if they do a good behavior. This way will negatively effect the children and make them connect the good behavior with the junk food. In this case, it will be hard to blame the children on their way because it doesn't exist unless their parents used it with them. In addition, the beverage industry, fast food industry, and the advertising agency can't be the major cause for the obesity in children because they aren't the ones getting the children the money to pay for their obesity even if they are considered as minor causes. On the other hand, the genetics are hard to classify as the only cause that leads to the obesity in children. Moreover, if they are genetically affected by obesity, they will not be obese until their behavioral environment is being harmful by eating fast food , drinking soft drinks, not doing exercise, and spending too much on playing video games. All these unhealthy behavior can be changed when the parents are aware to their children's health. In addition, we can't miss the prime role of the schools in this problem. According to the "Supersize Me", the gym class is just 45 minute (once or twice in a week). Also, the schools buy the soft drinks and some junk food for the children in order to make them choose their own life style as they say!. However, the schools and parents complete each other. Finally,If the schools and parents make a healthy environment for their children, the children will grow up far away from the obesity and be healthy even if they have being responsible about their choices.

  6. Although its difficult to single out just one specific cause for the obesity epidemic in America, I believe that the major cause of the problem is awful habits that parent teach it to their children. In my opinion , parent has affected the children because significant reasons . Most children spend approximately 12 hours per day at home listing , and watching their parent which make children follow the parent habits .For example, when a child see his or her mum crazy about fast-food or soda ,he or she would try it . In addition , nether my mother nor my father like fast food because of that all the family members do not eat it .As we all know junk food impacts to human body which cause obesity.
second ,parent should lecture children about healthy food .for example, they can reward them when they eat fruit ,and vegetable .Also ,they can read to them some stories about healthy person .A friend of main has three children .She found reading stories is helpful to treat chidden about health . When the parent cares about feeding children ,they can avoid obesity . Finally , education filed that parent has chosen to the children can affect children bodies. When the school sell soda or junk food, this maybe make young student gain fat .

  7. Although its difficult to single out just one specific cause for the obesity epidemic in America, I believe that the major cause of the problem is beverage industry. Because of the beverage industry's development, you can buy a lot of food with unbelievable cheap price with a average salary in America.
In Asia country, like my country, the beverage industry don't develop strong enough to make people choose fast food, junk food in their meals. They have a lot of restaurants with any scale which always have healthy traditional food with acceptable price, furthermore the fastfood industry in Asia country is not popular enough to give a cheap price like in America. Then if you have healthy food and fast food with a same price, what will you choose for your meals?
In conclusion, I believe that the major cause of obesity epidemic in America is the beverage industry of development. If in America, people had a lot of healthy food with same price with the fast food, I think they would know what is better for their health as well as American parents don't feel worry that their children will buy junk food, fast food or anything like that because healthy food always taste good.

  8. Although its difficult to single out just one specific cause for the obesity epidemic in America, I believe that the major cause of the problem is Genes. As we all know genes decide one person's eyes' color, skin and hair colors etc., people's most outside and inside characteristics are decided by genes. Meanwhile genes also decide one person's body shape and fat degree. According to Kolata marshals scientific study, fat people have more fat cells than other people. Once fat people lose a mount of weight, they often feel "a primal hunger" as strong as the urge a thirsty person feels to drink. Studies of twins and of adopted children also prove that whatever kind of environment or parents can not change the fact that they are fat people finally, because genes are the main cause, we can not change genes, so we can not change the fact.

  9. Although it’s difficult to single out just one specific cause for the obesity epidemic in America, I believe that the major cause of the problem is Genes. Scientifically studies have shown, that the gene is dominant in the increase of obesity. Furthermore, Kolata marshals scientific evidence to explain why keeping weight off is so difficult which “fat people have more fat cells than other people. Their metabolisms are normal but their appetites are larger. In the sense explained, most of their life is eating and eating. I pretty sure that most of the obese people’s money goes in food. They wish to lose weight “the obesity” if they could but they can’t, so they will not. They strive to lose weight “ the obesity” ; however, the environment where and how they grown has its impact.

The Genes is the main cause of the obesity inevitably. Also, the children who have this gene “ fat gene” will be obese. Definitely there is no doubt with this. Otherwise, the environment is of the factors that assist genes effectively. I mean the kind of the children I mentioned, live among people who like to eat a lot if not, they live in unhealthy environment which junk-foods as well as “fat- food” are located. Whether this or that. Environment plays an effective role in helping the gene “fat gene”.

Finally, do not forget the parents’ duty to guide their children in eating and also choose the right environment for them.

At the end, since the gene is dominant on the obesity, parents should teach their children to give up and to stay away from certain foods for a healthy life

  10. Although its difficult to single out just one specific cause for the obesity epidemic in America, I believe that the major cause of the problem is the parents, because they have the responsibility of taking care of their children. Parents have to control the food that children eat each day, no matter the quantity of advertisement that the children could see daily, in schools, on television, streets, or in the same restaurant that you are going to visit. As we know, the most important company of fast food in the United States is Mc Donald’s. Also, we know that they have covered completely the market with billions of dollars in advertising, promos, and toys for children. But, is Mc Donald’s the real problem in children obesity?, I don’t think so. Years ago, when this company began in this market, adult people start to eat this fat food without control of anybody, by themselves or by the government. By the time that results in that people became obese, and as a consequence their future children were also obese. If we analyze those people, they are immerse in a circle where they don’t understand how quite this circle and resolve the big problem that they face each day of their lives.

For me, to resolve a problem, we have to know what are causes the causes that lead the problem and take action in those possible causes. Here we have two possible causes, Mc Donald’s, or the fast food advertisements, and the parents who control the food in their children. As we can infer, we cannot control those companies in order to avoid the adds and the amount of restaurants that we can find out site, but as a parent you can control the time that you feed children with fat food. Parents have to explain to their children that they cannot eat in big quantities fat foods, that they have to avoid many quantities of sugar, like for example, drinking a daily bottle of coke in schools.

In my case I would like to achieve an agreement with my children. I know that we shouldn’t forbid those restaurants to our children because they are part of a daily life in each family in Americans, but we can avoid those kinds of food with children agreements. Also we have to encourage our children to do exercises, practice sports in order to avoid the obese, burning fat in their bodies.

  11. Although its difficult to single out just one specific cause for the obesity epidemic in America, I believe that the major cause of the problem is the genes. Some people gain weight easy even if they do not eat alot of food. However, some people eat alot of food and they do not even gain one kilo!.Also, people who have fat cells feel that they are hungry faster than the normal people. Despite that I believe that the main reason for obesity is the genes, I also believe that people can control their weight by doing exercises to burn their fats and reducing the number of their meals. For example, my weight of my friend was 100 kilos and all the members of her family are fat.It is related to their genes. She decided to make surgery to cut her stomach. Fortunately, the doctor advised her to follow a diet ,to walk one hour every day and to stop eating after 6 pm before she did the surgery. She followed what the doctor said and after 6 months she lost 26 kilos and her health is good. She decided not to do the surgery. In conclusion, the main reason to be fat is the genes but people can control their weight if they want!
