Blog #4.1: In the Call Lab (response to "Fat Chance") (due before class on Tuesday)

1. In the introductory paragraph, we read: "When you're blind, people want to help you. No one wants to help you when you're fat." Tell why there is such a stigma attached to obesity that no one wants to help fat people.

  1. I believe in this saying: "When you're blind, people want to help you. No one wants to help you when you're fat.". From the perspective of someone who is not obese, there is a big difference between a blind person and an obese person which makes the comparing between them not fair. The blind person doesn't want or choose their predestination to be blind, and doesn't have the opportunity to fix this problem which changed their life. That is what makes us help blind people. On the other hand, an obese person leads themselves to the obesity by the lifestyle they are used to. In addition, they wait for help from others, instead they do it for themselves. Undoubtedly, you will need someone to push you to make the positive change in your life; however, this change will not happen without your desire first. Moreover, if you have the genetic obesity, that doesn't mean you have to get the creativity off from your life. There are obese people who can walk and run better than I do. They make me feel ashamed and want to register in the gym. Finally, the obese people don't need help from others as they need it from themselves.

  2. I think because the fat person neglected his/her body by not exercising or doing anything to stop increasing his weight. In this case the fat person has the ability to change his/her weight, so when the people hate him/her that because of neglect. In addition, the blind person can't do anything to change his eyes. That gives us encouraging to help them because they can't do anything to change themselves.

  3. Blind people have no choice to be blind. It’s their destiny being blind and of course we feel sorry for them and we’d like to help them in anyway with showing all our respect for them. On the other hand, fat people, it’s their choice of being fat. I believe some people obesity had been inherited from their parents, but still they can work on themselves to be healthy. They can schedule their meals and doing exercises, so they can be healthy.

  4. In my opinion, fat people have the chance to change their body doesn't matter from where they got obesity; however, we can push them up to lost their fat. On the other hand, blind people do not have any choice to change their problem, and we should help them as much as we can.

  5. We think that people tend to help blind persons instead of fat persons because they have developped the need to make them feel the same feeling that them and be like a normal preson. On the other hand, people do not want to help fat people because in their mind it is their fault if their are so big and they have to assume their acts.

  6. People who don't like to help obese people think that all of obese people can lose weight if they exercise or follow diet. They think that obese person has the ability to lose weight but he doesn't want to! Thats why ordinary people don't like to help obese people! they think that obese people must help themselves. On the other hand, ordinary people like to help blind person because they feel sorry for them.Ordinary people believe that blind person doesn't have the ability to change the fact which is that he/she is blind.
