Hi Guys.
First of all, I want to tell you that I'm happy to have met all of you and I look forward to a fun and productive semester together.
Second, I want to ask you to do a little bit of work with roots, prefixes, and suffixes. As you probably have seen, I have posted some websites as well as some powerpoint slides on the blog for you to study. In addition, I would like you to look at the charts on pp. 21-22 of the Read to Succeed packet. Try to fill in the chart with examples of your own. After that, look over pp. 23-24, which contain the book's examples. It's a challenge to learn all of the roots and affixes but if you have some knowledge of them, it will go a long way to help you "unlock" unknown vocabulary. If you can learn a few a day, you'll see how much progress you can make. As I said in 5B, vocabulary is the key to UNDERSTANDING the language (INPUT).
Finally, I want to encourage you to review the new vocabulary you learned this week and to try to incorporate some of the words into your writing and speaking (OUTPUT). That is how you will "internalize" the vocabulary; by internalize I mean make it your own, make it part of yourself. Our goal is to actually learn the vocabulary, NOT to just memorize it for a test.
I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.
Enjoy the long weekend :D
